Dr. Denise M. Walker is Licensed Professional Counselor through the states of Texas and Louisiana, and also a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist through the state of Louisiana. Dr. Walker is trained to work with adolescents, adults, couples, and families with varying levels of psychological and relational concerns. Dr. Walker views the world from a systemic approach which translates into her work. When working with clients, she focuses on relationships and recognizes that individuals are always embedded in their social situation; ultimately seeing a person from a holistic perspective. Dr. Walker’s goal is simple, to help the client recognize the influences in their life and assist with accomplishing healing.
Dr. Walker earned her B.S. and M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Dr. Walker completed her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Texas A&M University-Commerce with a specialization in Student Affairs. Before joining Davis Counseling Center, Dr. Walker worked in higher education, community-based counseling centers, and juvenile detention centers. Dr. Walker is also trained in EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which is a modality of therapy to relieve psychological stress for individuals who have experienced traumatic events.
When working with Dr. Walker, clients can expect a warm and welcoming environment where the understanding and evolving can occur. Dr. Walker believes that people are ever-evolving and changing and many stressors in life are alleviated by the personal commitment to make a change. Dr. Walker believes that flexibility and grace are two extremely important aspects of life that are commonly dismissed.
Dr. Walker has expertise working with underrepresented adolescents and families, young adult women of color experiencing life transitions, trauma related issues.
